our history
Fostering Hope was founded in 2013 by Nicole Shefrin, alongside Jason Shefrin and Jessica Everest, with a mission to transform the lives of children in foster care and residential treatment across Northeast Ohio. Nicole’s passion for this work stems from her own childhood experiences, which gave her a deep understanding of the challenges faced by children in the foster care system.
In 2006, Nicole began volunteering at local residential treatment facilities, where she witnessed firsthand the emotional and developmental gaps faced by children in foster care. She quickly realized that the simple joys and typical milestones of childhood—things many take for granted—were often absent for these kids. Fueled by her personal history and volunteer experiences, Nicole was determined to bridge these gaps and create meaningful opportunities for healing and growth.
Fostering Hope was established to raise awareness and provide support in areas where children in foster care often face unmet needs. Since its inception, the organization has positively impacted over 9,000 children through programs designed to foster connection, promote resilience, and build a sense of community.
The work was rooted in three core pillars:
Trauma-Informed Health & Wellness: Helping children navigate their emotions and build resilience.
Typical Childhood Experiences: Providing joyful moments, celebrations, and activities that create lasting memories.
Community Involvement: Encouraging connections that foster belonging and support.
Signature programs such as Journey Bags, the Birthday Program, Seasonal Gifts, and Residential Support continue to reflect the commitment to meeting children where they are and providing the resources they need to thrive.
Today, Fostering Hope continues to expand its reach while staying true to its mission: to bring hope, joy, and a brighter future to children in foster care and residential treatment.
